Blog - Oracle Commerce (ATG) or Not?

Good Afternoon Oracle friends and cohorts!
Carolina is contemplating starting a blog.

I am curious to know what platform you use if other than Oralce (WordPress, Tumblr etc.) and what you do and don't like. If you are using Oralce, please share.

I did some poking around in the Oracle help documentation, (which is exhausting to use), and typical requires a decent amount of time for a business user to land in all the right places to make a high level assessment, and found some articles about enabling the Blog functionality in the content repository....and thousands and thousands of other articles. I would sure like the "one pager" or the CliffsNotes that highlight front end management, back end capabilities, and level of effort to deploy.

Thank you in advance for your time!

    Elaine

    Hello Elaine,

Assuming you are looking to share read-only content and don't need tight integration with the eCommerce platform, WordPress is a good option that we have used a few times. There's a large community and you will find plugins for almost anything you want to do. For professional hosting, we have used "wpengine.com", which is very reliable. Of course, you can also opt for WordPress on-prem managed by your team.

    Hope this helps,
    José

    Hi Elaine,

do you have any special requirements for your blog implementation? Do you only want to post some articles? Do you need a rating for your blogs or a comment functionality or kind of discussion board?
Before recommending a solution to you, I would like to understand this first. It doesn't make sense to tell you, what we/others have done, because I would maybe recommend something to you you dom't really need. In this case tha administration, training, management effort can be much higher than the benefit you have.

    Heiko,
Our intent for this engagment piece is to ultimately drive traffic to our website for content and products. That could mean a one-way arrangment or it could mean allowing outside posts, comments, ratings. We have not decided the best course of action yet. I suspect our decision will in part be pased on what is available, the cost, the implementation time and the maintenance time for both situations.

We could also go for the phased approach. Phase 1 would be carolina self post only for products and content that allows us to drive traffic to our main website. Phase 2, could be all else. The phased approach means we a scaleable solution.

Thank you very much for your thoughts and input!

    Elaine

    Hi Elaine,

we have implemented a headless CMS-System for one of our customers and integrated it with their Microsoft Dynamics.

This CMS is a basic package which is ready for integration and extending. It would easily be possible to integrate it with Oracle Commerce and also do the content management in BCC. The front end is based on AJAX.

It would fit into your current architecture.

I don't know if you will be in Austin, but we could discuss it there together with David or if this is too late, we can schedule a call.

    Brgds,

    Heiko

    Hi Elaine,

If you want to have a blog that is totally separate from your Commerce experience, then something like Wordpress or Drupal will do just fine.

If you are looking to integrate content and commerce, then you will need to develop a custom front-end, and use a CMS for creating, previewing, managing, and deploying content to the site.  The above tools will work, but they may be too bloated (they have functionalities you won't need, increasing TCO).

Oracle Commerce has some CMS functionality provided via the BCC tool, using some of the content types you are learning about in their documentation.  The BCC does provide you with some very good out-of-the-box functions, including inline preview, staging preview, versioning, rollback, the ability to work in projects.  Depending on your implementation - might be the fastest path to market.  The downsides are... well, it's the BCC.

I'm more excited about some options for CMS systems that are cloud-native and headless, and can easily integrate into Oracle Commerce.  These solutions can be very cost effective, have extremely low TCO,  some even have clear transparent pricing including free tiers that provide a tremendous amount of functionality.  Integration is very simple and content can be used to enrich the commerce experience seamlessly.

Finally, you might want to make your blog content searchable - so plan some work for this as well.

Feel free to reach out if you would like to see some demos.

    all the best,
